I designed the plugin, and yes, it was a licensed port of Arete software, with a few new features I added in such as surface displacement and surface mapping (which allowed Mastercard to float their logo on the surface of water, in one early example). I licensed the software to Digital Anarchy back in about 2002, and they subsequently sold it to Red Giant a few years ago. 'Water Simulation' is a pretty broad topic, however. Psunami is really a Large Surface Wave simulator, with the waves generated by a wind simulation (which is how most ocean waves are formed), whereas WaveWorld is a 'Local Wave Simulator' where the waves are produced by interfering with a surface (dragging your finger around the surface of a puddle, for example). I designed that one too. Other examples that I don't yet think exist in AE include 2D and 3D 'Volumetric Liquid Simulators', although you can maybe fake a 2D version of it with Newton. No, I'm saying that I was actually at Digital Domain through Titanic. They used Arete, specifically, no plug-in for any software that was not used there. The version of Arete that was used was also a custom build made for DD because of our specific needs for ship displacement and other factors. Arete was essentially a 'black box' and we needed more than image output. We worked on our own system in Renderman but the lighting model and wave anti-aliasing was already working and better in Arete (and I don't see evidence of the Arete lighting model or render engine in any of the Psunami output). I don't recall if it was a accessed through a plug-in within Nuke or not. I do recall the wake system being a custom setup in Nuke, however, using mainly photographic elements. The author in fact confirms below, in this thread, that the code was licensed from Arete in 2002 to Digital Anarchy, which in turn sold it to Red Giant sometime after that. Anyway, I was a consultant on Titanic for a day on crowd methodology for populating the decks of the miniature plates. I was around it the entire time with multiple suite-mates working on it and always aware of their issues and tasks and I was thankful that I dodged that bullet. So, I maintain they're really stretching a point here for marketing purposes. I get why they would but it says, without saying, that you can use Psunami to create the same or even similar water as those films. That would be patently false. It seems to me like we are splitting hairs. John Knoll's lens flare renderer existed long before it was an AE plugin or was called 'Light Factory'. But, I wouldn't jump on anyone for saying that KLF was used / developed for Star Trek:TNG. It was probably modified slightly, it certainly had different UI components and a different host. But basically, that was Knoll Light Factory in its early form. Psunami, then or now, could be mixed with a number of other technologies, or used in a number of different host apps. Like it was for The Aviator (via Digital Fusion).
